Seymour is very complex. On the outside, he is intelligent, sarcastic, soft-spoken, polite, calm, elegant, gentle, and charming.
But inside, he is broken, restless, traumatized, insecure, capable of kindness, and capable of love, but unable to express it in a healthy way. He is full of sorrow. He understands the pain of Spira, but his way of saving it became twisted.
I put Seymour's personality into two categories: the outside, how other characters see him, and the inside, his twisted mind and insecurity.
Seymour is a very gentle and soft-spoken person when you first meet him. You never hear the Maester yelling or screaming. He always speaks in a polite manner, even when he shares his view of the world.
Even the official Japanese Final Fantasy X page describes Seymour as intelligent, gentle, and personable. He is seen as someone who could become a bridge between the Guado and humans, and the people of Spira support him with enthusiasm.
This is important to me, because Seymour does not enter the story as a screaming villain. He enters as someone people trust. That makes his charm even more dangerous.
FrozenNight (Jenangel) already noticed it back then: Seymour is a very good talker. ^_^ And honestly, the Ultimania basically agrees - Seymour talks for ages.
Even in my older shrine, I already wrote that Seymour is a very good talker. That still feels true to me. Seymour uses words carefully. He can sound gentle, wise, and comforting, while slowly leading people toward his own twisted view of Spira.
Seymour is intelligent, and I think he knows very well how people see him. He uses his charm, his soft voice, and his position as a Maester to make people trust him. That is what makes him dangerous. He does not need to scream or act cruel in public. He can mislead people with a gentle smile and polite words.
A Guado in Guadosalam tells us about Lord Seymour's knowledge and how he teaches the Guado youth numerous subjects, such as the history of Spira and Yevon's teachings. He can explain everything very clearly.
This line shows that Seymour is not only powerful or charming. He is also educated, articulate, and capable of teaching others. He knows how to speak, how to explain things, and how to present himself as someone people can trust.
Seymour can be sarcastic in a very calm, elegant, and controlled way. He does not need to raise his voice. Sometimes one short line is enough.
This line to Wakka during Operation Mi'ihen always makes me laugh, because it is so dry. Seymour knows exactly what is happening, but instead of reacting with panic or anger, he simply tells them to pretend they did not see the forbidden machina being used against Sin. Thank you for the information. Very helpful, Maester Seymour.
That is very Seymour to me. His sarcasm is not loud. It hides behind elegance, authority, and that silky voice. He can sound perfectly polite while saying something that is actually very sharp.
He even proposes to Yuna with gentle words, which gives his personality a softer touch at first. At first, he appears calm, elegant, and almost comforting. But this changes when the party confronts him with the death of his father, Lord Jyscal.
Everything is wrapped together in his restless mind: his twisted idea to save Spira by seeking the release of death, the trauma that affected him in his childhood, the belief that love is sacrifice, his insecurity about how he looks, and the kindness and love he was still capable of feeling for his mother.
Instead of choosing to become the best version of himself, he chose a different path. He wanted to save the world through revenge.
He does not talk about what happened in the past, just like the other Guado. He would never admit that he feels vulnerable, but deep down, he is still the ten-year-old child all alone in Baaj, waiting to be saved from suffering.
If someone understood Spira's pain more than anyone, then it was Seymour Guado.
Sin is the endless cycle of death and rebirth. A summoner defeats Sin with the Final Aeon, the Calm begins, and then Sin is reborn again. Seymour sees this cycle and believes that death is the only true escape from suffering.
He lost all hope when his beloved mother risked her life to become the fayth of the Final Summoning, a tradition created by Yevon's teachings. I really understand that he felt hopeless, because he was only ten years old. He was abandoned by society: too human for the Guado, and too Guado for the humans.
According to the Final Fantasy X Ultimania Omega, Seymour did not find salvation in Yevon's teachings. The very idea of "maintaining Spira's hope" was meaningless to him. Instead of giving hope, he desired revenge: a desire to spread his own sorrow to everyone.
This line can be interpreted this way: his mother became a fayth for the Final Summoning, he lost his own hope, and at the same time, he realized that Spira's hope was futile. That is why he wanted to break this spiral of tragedy.
He attempted to break the spiral and free people from their sorrow. In other words, he was almost like Tidus and the others, but the method he tried to use was twisted. His twisted mind of saving Spira through death was caused by trauma, isolation, discrimination, and racism.
I also believe there was kindness inside Seymour, even if it became buried under all his sorrow. He was not empty. He was broken.
The withered bouquet in Baaj Temple is one of the reasons why I feel this way. If Seymour made that bouquet with heart and soul for his mother, then he was still capable of love. There was still something gentle in him before everything became twisted.
Even his Japanese voice actor once said that he thinks Seymour is a very loving person. And honestly, I agree. That makes Seymour even more tragic to me. His love did not disappear, but sorrow, rejection, and loneliness changed it into something dangerous.
He can act like a leader and a Maester, but I also believe he is very insecure about how he looks. A good example of this is during the wedding scene. Seymour gently touches Yuna and looks at how beautiful she is. He even puts a small smile on his face before kissing her.
The Final Fantasy X Ultimania Omega guide basically confirms that Seymour's expression during the wedding kiss was important. The staff even wanted to show a little of his sadness. So yes, I was not imagining it. That hurt look was there.
When Yuna wipes her mouth in disgust, Seymour does not explode in anger. For a few seconds, his expression changes. He looks wounded, almost as if her rejection touched something he was trying to keep buried. But then he hides it again, because he is already used to wearing a mask.
