Seymour’s appearance is truly spectacular. Compared to the other Maesters of Yevon and the priests, his design is much more revealing, elegant, and dramatic.
He wears a dark purple robe with red piping and a striking green sash filled with intricate details. The robe is open above the waist, revealing his chest and the two large black markings that spread across his skin.
As a half-human and half-Guado, Seymour reflects traits from both races. His long blue, vine-like locks fall down his back, while a heavy fringe partially covers his face. He has beautiful violet eyes and human ears, which make his mixed heritage even more noticeable. His hands are pointed, almost claw-like, and subtle veins run across his face and body, giving him an appearance that is both vulnerable and otherworldly.
Back in 2004, I was already wondering what was on Seymour’s chest. Was it a tattoo design, or was it chest hair? According to the Final Fantasy X Ultimania Omega: it is both.
The first time I saw someone mention this was on a Japanese cosplay page. It said that the black marking on his chest was not just a tattoo, but actually chest hair. When I read that information, my honest reaction was: no, are you serious? You must be joking, right?
Until I found the developer conversation in the Final Fantasy X Ultimania Omega. Yes, it is actually real. In my mind, I just thought: why me? Why did I find something like this?
This is what happens when shrine research goes in a direction I was not prepared for. I expected something about a tattoo design, a Guado symbol, a fiend (for example: Behemoth), a dragon, or maybe even the tattoo system. But no. Square Enix gave me chest hair.
To be precise, it is not only chest hair, but also tattoos.
And honestly? I find this detail attractive. The chest hair and tattoos make Seymour look more mature and masculine to me. He is not smooth and polished in the same way as Tidus. Tidus has that young, sporty, almost plastic-fantastic look, while Seymour feels darker, stranger, and more grown up.
Thank you, Square Enix. I was not prepared for this kind of information.
And now I cannot help wondering: if this is partly chest hair, who trimmed it so neatly? Square Enix, I now have questions I never expected to have. Is there a Guado grooming ritual I was not supposed to know about?
